However, Vadam was detained by immigration authorities shortly after his release due to a longstanding deportation order linked to nonviolent drug and theft convictions from the 1980s. Despite his family emphasizing his positive influence and rehabilitation during his incarceration, federal authorities are proceeding with deportation, citing existing immigration law. Vadam is currently held in a private ICE detention center in Pennsylvania, where concerns about medical care have been reported.

Subramaniam Vadam spent over 40 years in prison, convicted of murdering a friend in Pennsylvania in 1980. Vadam always said he didn't do it. You know, he never gave up the hope that the truth would come out and he maintained his innocence. Lawyers working with the Pennsylvania Innocence Project found the jury never saw evidence suggesting the gun in the murder could not have been the one Vadam owned. In August, a judge overturned the conviction. Prosecutors declined to retry the case. Vadam was a free man, but only for a day. Immigration authorities picked him up. Vadam, born in India, arrived in the U.S. as a baby in 1962 with his family. He had a deportation order stemming from a drug conviction back in 1984, intent to distribute LSD. He also had a theft conviction, crimes unrelated to the murder. The federal government is now moving to deport him, DHS telling Scripps News, having a single conviction vacated when you have a laundry list will not stop ICE's enforcement of the federal immigration law. Vadam's family says the life he lived in prison should outweigh his nonviolent crimes for more than four decades ago. He's helped so many other people complete their GEDs and their degrees and advise them. And as he got older, you know, help them navigate the system. They don't view him as any kind of danger to the community, and he had an outstanding record. The 64-year-old sits at a private ICE detention center in Pennsylvania, where a Scripps News investigation found many complaints about inadequate medical care.
