The legislation also introduces a national gun buyback scheme and grants expanded powers to the Home Affairs Minister to cancel visas and ban hate groups. While the opposition will not block the laws, it has raised concerns about the complexity and potential unintended consequences of the measures.

Introducing tougher penalties for hate crimes and giving the Home Affairs Minister new powers to cancel or reject visas and list organisations as prohibited hate groups. ASIO's previously claimed anti-Semitism's been fuelled by Islamic extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir and that the neo-Nazi National Socialist Network has exploited concerns over immigration, but operating within the law. They kept themselves just below the threshold. We are lowering that threshold. It would also establish a national gun buyback scheme, funding split 50-50 with the states. States who don't participate will have to justify that to their own people. Do you anticipate people will be arrested or visas revoked under these new laws immediately? We haven't passed the laws yet. Ahead of a full briefing, the opposition's indicated it won't stand in the way, but is sceptical. To have so many complex matters wounding together, we are concerned will create unintended consequences. We're open to constructive suggestions.
