For people like Ahmed El Safadi, the wait is unbearable. The remains of his family is beneath what was once their home, a home now reduced to layers of dust and concrete. I only want to retrieve their bodies from the rubble in order to give them a proper burial. It's my responsibility as their eldest son. But for Gaza's exhausted civil defense crews, the mission to recover the dead has become nearly impossible. With no heavy machinery, they rely on their bare hands, simple tools and faith. We conducted our search with the limited and decaying equipment that we have. We have asked the world to bring in heavy equipment in order to recover the remains. But we have more than 10,000 missing under the rubble. Without heavy equipment, we can't reach them. Every hour that passes, hope fades. The United Nations Development Program says Gaza needs an enormous amount of machinery just to begin clearing the debris, a task that could take years. Eventually, we hope that access can be provided, that we can bring in some of the heavy equipment that are needed for this massive task as well. It will be, you know, quite a big number that will be required, heavy infrastructure like loaders, like trucks and other equipment. What was once a city of life is now a graveyard of memories, where every pile of stone hides a loved one still waiting to be found. Days after the bombardment, Palestinian families are desperately waiting to get the bodies of their relatives from beneath the rubble. But with Israel's ban on heavy machinery entering the Gaza Strip, civil defense teams are struggling to retrieve the thousands of remains still trapped under much of Gaza's destroyed buildings.
