Incidents between orcas and boats off Portugal’s coast have increased over the past five years. Experts say the whales’ curiosity about rudders and ship movements may be driving these encounters, raising safety concerns for both marine life and vessels.

Encounters between orcas and boats have increased off the coast of Portugal, with nearly 60 incidents reported this year. While no injuries have been reported, several vessels have been sunk as a result of these interactions. Scientists suggest that the orcas, which can weigh up to 11 tons, are engaging in playful behavior rather than displaying aggression. The behavior, believed to be learned and initially observed among a few juveniles, has now spread to a larger portion of the local orca population. In response, the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests has issued safety protocols for boaters to follow when approached by orcas, including stopping engines and avoiding sudden movements.

This year, there have been just under 60 encounters of orcas ramming into boats off the coast of Portugal. In recent years, the number of incidents has multiplied. No injuries have so far been reported. However, the orcas have sunk in multiple vessels. In relation to the interactions and sightings of orcas during 2025, there are 30 sightings and 24 interactions. Scientists believe that the goal of the orcas, which can weigh up to 11 tons, is to play and not attack. We see this almost like a game, almost like that rope game, one pulls to one side, the other pulls to the other. Why? Because the rope is a fundamental part of the boat direction. And the fact that they play with the rope, they are changing the direction of the boat and it seems that it dispels the interest. We cannot say that these are aggressive behaviors. As these are large animals, if they wanted to have an aggressive behavior, it would be of a different intensity, of a different scale. The science community believes the rammings are likely a learned behavior among the animals. And what started with just a few juvenile orcas has now spread to a larger number of individuals in the population. We are talking about 40, 30, 40 individuals. And therefore, the estimate is that perhaps half of this number already begins to demonstrate this type of interaction with the prey. The Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests created a safety protocol on how to react in the event of orcas approaching boats. There are two possible situations. One is to stop the machines, lower the sails, not make sudden movements and wait for the animals to spread. The other situation, and I am referring to the fact that the sea allows it, is to engage the machines in a row.
