Optus executives, along with leaders from Telstra and TPG Telecom, were called to Canberra to address concerns over a recent triple zero emergency call system failure linked to multiple deaths. The meeting, led by the Communications Minister, focused on ensuring the reliability of emergency services ahead of the bushfire season, with all major telcos agreeing to conduct outage drills and improve coordination with emergency response sectors.

In response to the outage, the Federal Government has introduced legislation to empower a departmental team to oversee the emergency call system. The move follows recommendations from a review into the 2023 Optus outage. The issue is also expected to be discussed between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Singapore's Prime Minister, as Singtel, Optus's parent company, is majority-owned by a Singaporean state investment firm.

Legislating a triple zero custodian will help but there is no silver bullet solution for corporate failure. It seems like the Government's rushing this through as a bit of a political PR exercise. It had been recommended by a review into the widespread Optus outage in 2023. Has the Minister personally phoned each family to apologise for the Albanese Labor Government's inaction? The politicising of a catastrophe here is letting Optus off the hook and you should be ashamed of yourself. Anthony Albanese is also expected to raise this issue with Singapore's Prime Minister. They're having dinner together tonight in Canberra. A Singaporean state-owned investment firm holds a majority stake in Singtel, Optus's parent company.
