The telco back in the crosshairs of the communications and media authority. We did not expect to be here again so soon. Facing another investigation and new financial penalties, likely millions of dollars in fines. They can expect to suffer significant consequences as a result. Quite clearly, Optus's behaviour is completely unacceptable. The communications minister was first alerted to the issue on Thursday afternoon, told by email only 10 calls had been affected. The next day, the telco said that number was actually 100. 20 minutes later, Optus changed its tune again, confirming more than 600 calls didn't connect to emergency services. The emails we received on Thursday were pretty perfunctory and actually some of them were inaccurate. The communications regulator wasn't even informed of the issue until it was fixed, a breach of usual procedure. Part of the investigation into Optus will focus on how much the foreign-owned telco is actually spending to maintain the reliability of its mobile network across Australia. Optus needs to put in place a CEO and a board that fully understand the gravity of Australian demands that critical systems work. Calls are now growing for stricter regulations and tougher sanctions on telcos. We need to stop relying on the industry to write its own rules and review its own behaviour. To protect a lifeline we all rely on. We've received an update from Optus in the past few minutes. The telco says it has now identified another seven customers who couldn't connect to emergency services on Thursday. Three of those households no longer need any help, but Optus says it has been unable to make contact with the remaining four. That includes two customers in South Australia and two in Western Australia. Police in those states are now trying to track those people down to conduct welfare checks. Sandra?
