The case, which dates back approximately seven years, experienced delays due to legal challenges over the admissibility of evidence, including home security footage. The Supreme Court ultimately rejected these challenges, allowing the trial to proceed.

Well, opening statements are scheduled to begin this morning in a murder trial for the man accused of killing his brother and his brother's family. News 12 New Jersey's Tony Caputo outside the Monmouth County Courthouse this morning in Freehold. Tony, Paul Canero is also accused of setting homes on fire, two of them to cover this all up. Nick, he is. Good morning. Good morning, Simon. Good morning, folks. This all happened about seven years ago. I remember when we got the call to go cover this story, just thought it was a house fire at the time. As it later turned out, 59-year-old Paul Canero was charged with not only killing his brother, but killing his brother's wife and their two children in their Colts Neck home. Now, as Nick had mentioned, police say he then tried to cover up the crime by torching his own home in Ocean Township and then setting his brother's house on fire as well back in Colts Neck. Prosecutors say he was trying to make it look like the family was targeted. This case was delayed when Canero's lawyer argued some of the evidence, including home security video, was gathered illegally. The Supreme Court rejected that argument. Again, opening arguments are set to begin at about 8.30 this morning. News 12 New Jersey's Jim Murdock will be covering this trial for us and will certainly keep you posted as it develops.
