As fall football begins, the BBB is warning fans to watch out for fraudulent online gambling sites where you can lose hundreds of dollars or more.

With the start of the football season, there is a renewed warning about the potential risks associated with online sports betting and gaming. While many legitimate platforms exist, such as Draft Kings, FanDuel, Caesars, and MGM, there has been a rise in deceptive schemes targeting players.

Experts from the Better Business Bureau advise verifying the legality of online gambling in your location and being cautious of offers that seem suspicious, such as requests for cryptocurrency payments or evasive company behavior. They recommend researching companies and using resources like the BBB's ScamTracker to avoid falling victim to scams.

Melanie McGovern with the Better Business Bureau says whether you're placing a sports bet or playing a game for money, make sure online gambling is legal in your state. If you are in a state where it's not legal and you're getting an app or an email or a pop-up during another game, to play a game where you can win real money, you always have to be skeptical. She suggests reaching out to the company and understand the process and question anything that doesn't seem right. Arming yourself with that knowledge before you download that app, before you start placing bets, really important. She warns that deceptive schemes are becoming much more common. If they're being evasive, if they're saying they're going to pay you in cryptocurrency or something along those lines, those are the red flags that it might not be legal. And if you're still not sure the company is legitimate, she advises checking it out on the BBB's ScamTracker site. Because if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Nope, I don't bet online.
