The deadly earthquake one year ago, registering a magnitude of 7.8, claimed over 50,000 lives in Turkey and 5,900 in Syria, and left millions homeless, making it the deadliest disaster in the region. Many Syrians in the Idlib region in the north of the country say that relief efforts have failed them, and rebuilding projects have yet to begin.

One year after earthquake, many Syrians feel forgotten 

Idlib countryside, northwestern Syria. Most of the 6,000 Syrians who died in last year's earthquake come from this region. The Haroun family lost a son and their home. They are now renting this room and are waiting for aid which, they say, never arrived. Many organizations came to us, but we did not see any real help. We explained to them that we lost our house, our son died, our situation became tragic and we do not have money, but no one responded to our demands. Home to over 4 million people, Idlib is one of the last pockets of resistance against the Syrian regime. Since Damascus prevents humanitarian aid from reaching here, it has to come in through the border with Turkey. But it has been far from enough, and to make matters worse, local authorities are not carrying out the reconstruction they promised. That job is left to NGOs, like this one, the Molham team. The Molham Crescent project in Haram consists of 24 residential buildings, including 352 residential apartments. The project began in August 2023. Work is being carried out quickly so that these residential apartments will be ready for the first anniversary of the earthquake disaster. Projects like these are the exception. In the village of Hamzia, Mohamed, like so many others, is still waiting for his home to be restored. He has lost a dozen of his relatives in the earthquake and says he does not have the means to rent a new place on his own. So he is now living in this camp. It has been almost a year since the earthquake and this is our situation. The organizations that came to the village restored a very small part and did not support the people most affected. And we, whose homes were completely destroyed, still live in tents and caravans, surrounded by mud and the cold of winter. We live in a tragic situation. Even before the earthquake, there were around 800,000 people in Idlib living in such camps. Now, NGOs say, that number has risen by another 100,000.

The bodies of Perth brothers Callum and Jake Robinson have been formally identified after their grieving family arrived in Mexico. Authorities have arrested four people in connection with the alleged murders.
