Despite her efforts, she was bested by Katie Ledecky, who secured Olympic gold number nine. Titmus finished with a silver medal, shaving more than a second off her best ever time. Known as the "Tassie Terminator," Titmus revealed the pressure she felt coming into the games and expressed relief after her performance.

In other events, Kaylee McEwen faced controversy due to a surprising disqualification in the 200 IM. Initially finishing fourth, McEwen was awarded the bronze medal after American Alex Walsh was disqualified for an incorrect backstroke to breaststroke turn. This rule also led to McEwen’s disqualification at the World Championships last year. The Aussie team's mixed medley relay secured another bronze medal with McEwen, Josh Young, Molly O'Callaghan, and Matt Temple contributing to the success.

Aussie swimmer Ella Ramsey had to withdraw from her race due to COVID-19, highlighting concerns as the virus impacted several team members. Zack Cook and Lizzie Deckers still competed, while Lani Pallister adjusted her program.

Arnie isn't the hunter, she's the hunter. And for 16 laps, they swam stroke for stroke. Titmuss is coming. Come on Arnie, find something. Ledecky was too fast, claiming Olympic gold number nine. And to see her like that, I think it's just a testament of the incredible courage, the incredible fight that she's had in her. But tonight, instead of knocking her out, the rule has bumped her up. Well, karma comes around. So it's good to see that there's consistency. So it's fair, fair. Keeping alive her extraordinary track record, a medal in every Olympic event that she's entered. So good! I didn't know that!
