Two years after the Hamas attack on Israel, kibbutz Be’eri near Gaza remains scarred. Survivor Amit Salvi has dedicated himself to rebuilding the community, sharing his experiences and helping residents return despite ongoing challenges.

Amit Salvi, a lifelong resident of Kibbutz Be'eri, survived the October 7 attack in which militants entered the community, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. In the aftermath, Salvi has committed himself to rebuilding the kibbutz, overseeing the construction of new homes and encouraging families to return.

The community remains divided on how to handle the memory of the attack, with some advocating for the preservation of certain homes as memorials while others prefer to demolish all traces of the violence. Salvi believes that rebuilding is a form of healing for himself and the kibbutz, even as the trauma of the events continues to affect residents.

Part of the argument that we have between us is what should we do with the memory? How can we remain or reserve the memory and in what way? Some people say, some members are saying, let's destroy everything. We don't want to remember anything, just, you know, corner here and corner there. Some people said we have to keep one, two, three houses for a generation ahead. It was a very, very, very emotional, big and still debate between the people, between the members of the Kibbutz, tearing us apart almost. My name is Amit, Amit Salvi. Born and raised in Berri, 72 years of age. I have three children, two daughters and one son. What happens here on 7th of October, we conquered by terrorists from Al-Ghaza, going and moving house to house, killing, looting, murdering and destroy houses, start setting on fire. I managed to escape from a house, hiding in my bush, nobody found me. And the reconstruction in Berri is my goal, my mission in life, in my old life, you know, my late life. So this is a neighborhood called Shikmim, we build here 52 houses, family houses. Every house is chosen already, they're marked by a family who are going to live here. There is people that didn't come back to Berri yet, they didn't see Berri from three years, they cannot come back. I want the people to live. I want family to come here. They cannot live with this Auschwitz, they cannot. And most of the family wants to destroy everything. They say if I'm coming here with my kids, I don't want them to see what happened here. Well, to tell you the truth, my sympathy muscles got dead on the 7th of October. I don't have the muscles to sympathize with the Arabs. I saw them, I saw what they did. This war has to be ended, the hostages have to come, the kidnappers have to come back to Israel. We have still four people on Gaza Strip, all of them dead, but we need the body to get the proper burial, Meni and Saar and Ror and Yossi. We need them back, the family needs them. What I'm doing now, I think for me it's healing me, and I think I'm doing good to Berri.
