The New York Police Department has announced that major crime rates in New York City have reached historic lows, a development credited to precision policing strategies. Police Commissioner Jessica Tish, speaking alongside Mayor Mamdani, highlighted the success of these efforts during the first public safety briefing of the year.

Despite the overall decline, the NYPD noted a troubling rise in youth gun violence, with 2025 seeing the highest number of teen shooting victims and suspects since 2018. In response, the department implemented school safety zones, resulting in significant reductions in crime and shootings in those areas, while emphasizing the need for continued, coordinated efforts to address youth crime.

New today, crime has hit historic lows in New York City. That's according to Police Commissioner Jessica Tish, who delivered the first public safety briefing of the new year. That's happening all alongside Mayor Mamdani. While the NYPD Commissioner touted record lows, there is one area of crime that continues to cause concern. News 12's Heather Fordham is at the Digital Center with the latest information. Heather, what can you tell us? Marcy, the city has not yet turned the tide on youth crime. The NYPD recorded the highest number of teen shooting victims and suspects in 2025 since they first started tracking the data back in 2018. Now let's put these numbers all into perspective. In 2025, the NYPD says 14% of shooting victims and 18% of gunmen were under the age of 18 years old. In response to those numbers, the NYPD created school safety zones where they deployed officers into the areas that teens and kids are most at risk. Think bus stops, busy sidewalks, and the routes students take to and from school. That implemented back in October, and since then there has been notable progress. The Commissioner reports overall crime is down more than 50% in those zones, and shootings particularly are down more than 70% in those school safety zones. Now there has also been progress inside schools with crime down on school campuses as well. Tish says addressing youth crime is going to be an all-hands-on-deck approach on both the city and state level. As for overall crime across the city, she credits precision policing. Our crime-fighting strategy in New York City is working. Now, I am never satisfied with the status quo. Just because it's the status quo, we're always gonna look for ways to sharpen and refine, but I think it's very clear that our approach in particular to violent crime in New York City and to subway crime in New York City has led to historic results. Tish also made it clear that she directly reports to Mayor Mamdani despite an executive order that moved her directive to report to the first deputy mayor under Mamdani.
