The strike follows months of unsuccessful contract negotiations between the hospitals and the New York State Nurses Association, with the union demanding better pay, staffing, and protections against workplace violence.

Hospitals affected include Montefiore, Mount Sinai, and New York Presbyterian, which have responded by hiring temporary nurses to maintain patient care. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that Department of Health workers will be present at all impacted hospitals during the strike, while negotiations between the union and hospital management continue.

What exactly does this mean for patient care? Well, this is the quiet before the storm Marcy. But as soon as six a.m. 15,000 nurses will walk off the job, which means patient care will certainly take a hit. Healthcare workers say this is temporary, though, as they fight for a fair contract, which will allow nurses to better care for patients. We're at Montefiore this morning. It's one of four New York City private hospitals where health care workers are refusing to work this morning. It comes after a contract battle between the hospitals and the New York State Nurses Association expired in December, and the two sides just unable to reach a new agreement ever since. Now, 10 days ago, the union sent a stark warning to a dozen hospitals, most of which have now reached an agreement. But today, nurses say at Montefiore, Mount Sinai, West New York, Presbyterian and Mount Sinai, they're all still threatening to cut their health benefits. Above all, the association is calling for protection from workplace violence, especially after a recent act of shooter at Mount Sinai and that frightening police involved shooting at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Brooklyn. Now, the Montefiore says that this would cost an estimate $3.6 billion to address all of these issues and have since acquired 1000 temporary nurses so that patients could get the care they still need. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also responding to this morning strike, saying Department of Health workers will be stationed throughout all affected hospitals during the duration of this strike now set to begin in about an hour.
