Two of the officers will not be able to return to work due to their injuries. The offender was given a community corrections order without additional prison time, leading to outrage among prison staff, who staged a walkout in protest.

As a result, public prisons have been placed under lockdown with only essential staff on duty. Authorities are considering an appeal of the court decision, while the Commission of Corrections is filing an urgent submission to oppose the inmate's release on parole. The industrial action is expected to impact the court system, which is already under strain.

Confronting gruesome injuries, these are the faces of four corrections officers after they were assaulted on the job by an inmate at Cessnock Jail. Completely unprovoked, assaulted four officers which ended up in their hospitalisation. Two of those officers will never work again. Today the offender was handed a community corrections order with no further prison time added to his sentence, sparking outrage among prison staff who've now walked off the job in protest. Over the last three years assaults have gone up by 43%. The only way that it's going to change is if inmates start getting real sentences. Public prisons are now under lockdown orders. We have skeleton staff on the ground providing all the essential services to keep prisoners within the system safe. The government is scrambling to have the matter brought to the Industrial Relations Commission to be resolved. An independent judicial decision of a local court is not the basis for a statewide industrial strike. Police prosecutors are now considering if there's basis for an appeal of the local court decision with this particular offender due to be released on parole as early as tomorrow. The Commission of Corrections will be filing an urgent submission opposing the release of the inmate. The stop work action will have flow-on effects on the court system, already under strain from the extended closure of the Downing Centre precinct. Where we have a prison system which has now become a powder keg of discontent. All inmates will remain confined to their cells until corrections staff return to work. Taylor Ryan, 10 News.
