The reserve is also expected to boost tourism, positioning the area as a key destination alongside other Australian landmarks.

However, the plan includes an immediate moratorium on logging within the proposed boundaries, resulting in job losses for 300 workers from six timber mills. The government has offered financial support to affected workers, but concerns remain about the supply of critical timber products. The proposal's future depends on approval under the federal carbon credit scheme and the passage of state legislation, with some political leaders expressing support for koala protection but raising questions about the plan's details.

This genuinely is one of the biggest strides forward for the protection of threatened species in the last 20 years. One that doubles as a tourism triumph. When visitors from overseas come here, they go and see the reef, they go and see Uluru and they come to the Great Koala National Park. But it does come at a cost. From tomorrow, a temporary moratorium on logging within the boundary will see 300 workers from six timber mills out of a job. Handed JobSeeker-style payments instead. This is an overnight ban on nearly half of the state's available timber resource in the North East. And these are critical products. Including many of the nation's power poles, timber for underground mines, housing materials and hardwood for redevelopment projects. But the Premier says with new technologies, we're becoming less reliant on hardwood. It doesn't mean there's no future for the industry, but it does mean that it's substantially changing. Making the park a reality, however, relies on it being registered under the federal government's carbon credit scheme. Its application is currently under review. Even if the state government clears that hurdle, it faces another challenge, convincing the parliament because to declare the land a national park, it first has to pass legislation. We support ambition when it comes to koala protection. There are a lot of unanswered questions. If the government really wants to make it happen, it'll take more than a leap of faith.
