The New South Wales government is introducing a ban on converted e-bikes on Sydney trains after several incidents of the vehicles catching fire.

The New South Wales government has announced that converted e-bikes will be banned from the rail network starting in November, following concerns about fire risks posed by faulty batteries and wiring. The decision comes after several incidents in NSW and other locations, with officials highlighting the dangers of lithium-ion batteries in confined spaces such as train platforms and carriages.

The ban will not extend to buses, ferries, or light rail services, as consultations revealed a blanket ban could unfairly impact food delivery riders. Transport staff will conduct enforcement blitzes, and those found in violation may face fines between $400 and $1,100, issued by police or transit officers. The announcement was underscored by a recent incident involving an e-scooter battery explosion, reinforcing the hazards of lithium-ion batteries.

That combined with confined underground spaces are making for an increasingly common emergency evacuation nightmare. We have had two incidents in NSW, one in Melbourne and there have been issues around the world. But the new rules won't extend to buses, ferries or the light rail after consultation found a blanket ban could disproportionately affect food delivery riders. We said we would take an evidence based approach. We know that we will need to continue to monitor the market, we will need to look at emerging technologies. Passengers be warned, transport staff will conduct hotspot blitzes and those who don't comply could cop fines between $400 and $1,100, though only police and transit officers can issue them. But even without the additional resources, the Transport Minister is confident the honesty system will work. Local users have got an interest in making this work on the system as well, so we're expecting word to spread and we're expecting people to do the right thing. And less than 20 minutes after that announcement, an e-scooter exploded in the garage of a Rouse Hill family home.
