North Korea's former propaganda chief, Kim Ki-nam, has passed away, as confirmed by state media reports. Kim Ki-nam, known for his pivotal role in shaping the cult of personality around the Kim dynasty, died at the age of 94 due to multiple organ dysfunction. His career spanned over decades, making him instrumental in the propaganda efforts for three generations of North Korea's ruling family.

Kim Jong Un, the current leader of North Korea, was photographed paying his respects at Kim Ki-nam's funeral, showcasing the high regard in which he was held within the ruling elite. Kim Ki-nam's significant contributions began when he became the deputy head of the Propaganda and Agitation Department in 1965, assuming full leadership of the department twenty years later, until his retirement in 2017. 

Throughout his tenure, Kim Ki-nam remained a key figure in the North Korean regime, evident from his visible positions during critical moments, including accompanying Kim Jong-un at the funeral of Kim Jong-il in 2011. His involvement transcended North Korea’s borders when he visited South Korea in 2009 for the funeral of former President Kim Jae-jung, highlighting his unique role in the regime’s foreign relations. Kim Ki-nam's strategic maneuvering within the top echelons of power secured him a notable place in the country's history, despite the challenges, including being placed on a US sanctions list in 2006 for his work with the regime.

The 94-year-old died Tuesday of multiple organ dysfunction, according to the state news agency. He was a kingpin for three generations of the Kim dynasty, which has ruled the Democratic People's Republic of Korea since 1948, a member of a core group of loyal officials. Kim Ki-nam became deputy head of the Propaganda and Agitation Department in 1965, before taking it over 20 years later. He retired in 2017. A measure of his closeness to the ruling family was evident in his accompanying Kim Jong-un alongside the hearse carrying Kim Jong-il in 2011. He was also one of the few North Korean officials to visit South Korea in 2009 for the funeral of former President Kim Jae-jung, who had started a policy of opening up to the North. His work for the regime earned him a place on a US sanctions list in 2006, but Kim Ki-nam's greatest attribute was his ability to navigate the higher echelons of power, where even members of the ruling family have fallen victim to the caprices of successive leaders.
