The Senate Judiciary Committee has moved forward with the nominations of Jeanine Pirro, a former Fox News anchor, for U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., and Emil Bove, a former private attorney for Donald Trump, for a judgeship on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. Both nominations proceeded despite opposition from some committee members, particularly regarding Bove's previous decisions and his responses to questions about presidential term limits.

At the same time, federal prosecutor Maurene Comey, known for her work on high-profile cases and as the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, has been fired. Comey expressed concern in a letter to colleagues about the impact of her dismissal on prosecutorial independence. The Department of Justice has not commented on the reasons for her termination.

Nominations for Bove, Pirro advance after Maurene Comey fired

We begin tonight with elevations and demotions in the administration's legal world. The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced Trump nominees Jeanne Pirro, a former Fox News anchor, and Emil Bove, Trump's former private attorney. Shown the exit was Maureen Comey, a senior federal prosecutor in New York City who worked on the Sean Combs and Jelaine Maxwell cases. CBS's Scott McFarlane joins us now. So Scott, let's start with Emil Bove. Why did Democrats walk out of the room? They wanted to extend the meeting that was happening to have more arguments. They wanted to call the witness against Emil Bove. They've had any number of arguments against Bove, whose fingerprints have been on so many key decisions in this first year of this second term. He was part of the decision to drop the case against New York Mayor Eric Adams for corruption, part of so many firings inside the Department of Justice, and was in the room for key meetings on that Kilmar-Abrego-Garcia matter. Democrats also were concerned that Emil Bove in a questionnaire submitted to the committee wouldn't declaratively say the 22nd Amendment prohibits Trump from a third term. But Bove had the votes from the jump, and he is on a fast track to a lifetime judgeship on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. And what about Fox News anchor Jeannine Pirro? What's notable about her elevation? Same meeting, same vote. She is also on a pathway to become the new U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. Very powerful position, huge staff, huge budget, huge portfolio. Jeannine Pirro has been in the job on an acting basis. There was not enough opposition for Democrats to keep the meeting going or to stop this nomination from moving forward. She looks to be a sure shot to be a federal prosecutor, from Judge John to prosecutor. So speaking of prosecutors, the federal prosecutor Maureen Comey, this is a daughter of former FBI director James Comey. What is she saying about her firing? In a letter to former colleagues obtained by CBS News, Maureen Comey writes, if a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain. Do not let that happen. Fear is the tool of the tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought. The Department of Justice and administration are commenting on why Maureen Comey was fired. But I'll say this, John, if they're trying to take the oxygen out of this Epstein controversy, Maureen was part of that Epstein prosecution team. Not likely to do that. Scott McFarlane in Washington.
