Residents and officials in Newfoundland and Labrador are beginning to assess the damage caused by the Kingston wildfire, the largest in the province, which has destroyed more than 200 structures, including over 35 in Small Point Adams Cove. Local leaders have conducted damage assessments and report that much of their town has been lost, with the recovery expected to take years.

Although recent rainfall and cooler weather have helped contain some fires, authorities have not yet lifted evacuation orders. The region continues to face elevated wildfire risks due to persistent dry conditions, lingering debris from past hurricanes, and record-breaking heat attributed to climate change. Experts warn that these factors are likely to contribute to ongoing fire threats.

N.L. communities get clearer picture of wildfire damage

What's going through your mind when you look out there, you look at the fire? It seems like it's knocked down a lot since it was yesterday. Lester Butt drove an hour to get a better look at the fire that's kept him out of his home for two weeks. For me, like hell. The Kingston fire, the largest in Newfoundland and Labrador, destroyed more than 200 structures. More than 35 of them are in Small Point Adams Cove. Its mayor and deputy personally drove through to do proper damage assessments. There's more in our town that has burned than has left really. When you look at even just over the land it's the town I mean will not be the same for years and years and years. Rain and cooler temperatures have helped firefighters. But evacuees are anxious to get home and see the damage for themselves. I know people are taking the last two days as positive news and it is positive news. We're still not in a place where we can remove any evacuation alerts or evacuation orders. In New Brunswick, the Miramichi fire may be contained. The shock of this wildfire season is not. I've never seen conditions this dry in the east coast. In Nova Scotia, words of caution as the weekend's rain dries off. The conditions are going to start to rise again to what we had last week. Also elevating Nova Scotia's risk of wildfire, the remnants of Hurricane Fiona. It's been a couple of years now since Hurricane Fiona came through. That created a lot of deadfall. It's still there and it's still fuel ready to combust. Climatologist Joel Finnis watched St. John's shatter heat records this summer. He says the Atlantic usually cools temperatures here. But with climate change, the ocean has gotten warmer and so has some of the air that blows across it. All of that allows us a greater chance to get to those higher temperatures.
