Hundreds of women have protested in the Nigerian capital to push for a bill that would add women-only seats in the Senate and House of Representatives. Thus far, Africa's most populous nation barely has any women lawmakers.

Women in Nigeria are calling for greater representation in the country's political system by supporting a bill that would reserve seats in parliament exclusively for women. Nigeria currently has one of the lowest rates of female parliamentary representation globally, with fewer than 5% of lawmakers being women and some state assemblies lacking any female members.

Protesters marched to a national public hearing for the Reserved Seats for Women bill, which was previously rejected. Advocates argue that structural, financial, religious, and cultural barriers prevent women from participating fully in politics. If passed, the bill would create 182 new seats in national and state parliaments for women, aiming to ensure more inclusive governance.

Nigerian women push for more female representation

These women want Nigerian politics to better represent them. They are demanding a bill be passed that will create more women legislators. Nigeria has one of the lowest numbers of women in parliament worldwide. And the latest World Economic Forum's gender gap report ranks the country as one of the worst in women's political empowerment. And that is why these women and their allies are taking to the streets to rally support for the Reserved Seats for Women bill, which they believe will ensure inclusive governance. The demonstrators marched to the bill's national public hearing, a strategic move to help give it a fighting chance after it was rejected back in 2022. The barriers that are against women who are participating in politics is structural, is financial, is religious, is even cultural. So when women who have the capacity come out to vie, they are usually sidelined because of these structural barriers. So therefore we are asking for reserved seats so women can contest on a level playing field amongst other women. Women make up half of Nigeria's population, but make up fewer than 5% in parliament. There are only 20 women out of 469 national lawmakers, while more than 10 state assemblies don't have female lawmakers at all. We are trying to correct the imbalance of the population, diversity in our governance systems, in our political process, to make sure that women are represented, men are represented. We are not in a competition. We see young women suffering double jeopardy because they are first marginalized as women and also marginalized as youth. If the bill is passed into law, 182 new seats will be created reserved for women only to contest in national and state parliaments.
