The session was part of a series of events organised by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation to mark World Cotton Day, an initiative that recognises the significance of cotton globally.

Alphadi, who also serves as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for African Innovation and Creation, used the opportunity to showcase the quality of African cotton and encourage students to blend African and Italian traditions in their designs. The event aimed to inspire students and highlight the global importance of cotton, which supports millions of livelihoods and is a vital export for many developing countries.

It was part of a series of events organised by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation to celebrate World Cotton Day on October 7th. Known as the magician of the desert for his haute couture creations, Alfadi is also a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for African Innovation and Creation. For me, this is a way to highlight all that Africa is capable of. It's a fitting way to pay tribute to our continent and also to value the work and illustrate Africa's strengths. African cotton is a quality product. It can be used by people of the Sahel as well as Europeans, Americans, the whole world. For Alfadi, the masterclass was an opportunity to teach students how to blend African and Italian traditions through cotton-based designs. For students, it was a chance to be exposed to new ideas and find inspiration in unexpected places. This is really interesting for us because it's the first time we've worked directly with a culture very different from our own. We thought it would be fun to be part of this, the idea to challenge ourselves to blend two very different cultures. But in the end, we realised many similarities. In 2021, the UN designated October 7th World Cotton Day as a way of recognising its unique benefits. The idea of World Cotton Day came from many African cotton-producing countries. They got together and they decided that the best way to promote cotton and their product is to try to push for a World Cotton Day, for the world to celebrate, or at least get one day for the world to celebrate cotton. The cotton sector employs millions of people worldwide. A top industry for some of the poorest countries, it attracts export revenues for producers.
