An Italian non-governmental organisation, Mediterranea Saving Humans, reported rescuing 10 migrants off the coast of Libya after they were allegedly thrown into the sea by armed militia. The NGO released footage showing a military-style boat approaching their vessel in international waters north of Tripoli. 

According to the organisation, the attackers used violence against the migrants before the rescue crew intervened. The NGO also stated that its vessels have experienced repeated intimidation from both the Libyan Coast Guard and masked men on unmarked speedboats during their operations. Libya continues to be a major departure point for migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.

Libya has long been a major departure point for migrants risking the Mediterranean crossing to Europe.
