Montreal's airport has introduced a new Uber pickup system requiring passengers to provide a PIN code to drivers at the front of a queue, similar to taxi lines. Some travelers, including Jordan Lainé, have expressed concerns about feeling rushed and not receiving driver or vehicle information in advance, which they say raises safety issues.

Airport officials state the changes were made to address the popularity of ride-sharing and issues with illegal drivers. The airport is considering additional signage to remind passengers to connect with drivers before entering vehicles, and encourages reporting of any problems. Uber Canada has not yet responded to these concerns.

New Uber rules at Montreal airport make some travelers feel rushed

Montreal has implemented a new system for leaving the airport with Uber and I think it's actually pretty dangerous and so I wanted to give a little safety reminder to my ladies. Earlier this week, Jordan Lainé, founder of a mental health non-profit and wife of Montreal Canadiens player Patrick Lainé, took to TikTok to share her airport experience where she says she felt uncomfortable when getting into her Uber. I told my driver when I got to the front of the line, I want to connect to you now, not like before I get in your car. And he said, no, that's not how it works. Get in my car and then I'll connect to you then. And I had to kind of sternly say like, no, sir, I'm not getting in your vehicle until you connect with me on the Uber app. With the popularity of the ride sharing service, the airport of Montreal says it had to make changes to the pickup system. Now Uber drivers get in a line just like taxis and pick up passengers as they come. That means clients don't get information on their driver until they give them an automatically generated PIN. The way that we do things now is through a NIP system. So people are in line when they get to the front of the line, they're directed to their Uber and they have to share their NIP with the driver to connect. Lainé says this can make users like her feel rushed without having safety information on their Uber beforehand. Being a young woman in this day and age, you need to be really careful about the kind of situations that you're putting yourself into. Many people commenting under Lainé's TikTok expressed the same sentiment. One woman saying she also felt rushed to get into an Uber before being able to connect with the driver. Another says that exchanging PINs isn't the only issue. The commenter says they wouldn't get into three vehicles in a row at the airport because they didn't have clear Uber signage on the car. And another comment, they've had this system in place for months now and I don't like it. I prefer to know my car and driver in advance. We do have issues at the airport with illegal drivers, people that are trying to flag passengers at different pickup points on the airport. So for the safety of everyone, it's important to show the number before, even if you feel like you're a bit rushed. We have agents there on the ramp that can help passengers. Lainé says she also wrote to the mayor of Montreal and to Uber, hoping they will address the issue. We're looking into adding some signage on the ramp to really put it out there that passengers have to connect before they get in the car. Uber Canada did not respond back in time for this story. The airport is encouraging passengers to contact their emergency line or file an official complaint with the airport if they encounter any issues with Uber on site.
