There is a new voice that will be announcing the races at the Del Mar Racetrack, and he’s a veteran who has called races all over the country, including the Kentucky Derby.

Larry Comas, a veteran horse racing announcer, has been appointed as the new track announcer at Del Mar Racetrack. Comas brings extensive experience, having called races across the United States, including prestigious events like the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Breeders Cup.

Comas replaces longtime Del Mar announcer Trevor Denman and is looking forward to the unique atmosphere and excitement of Del Mar's racing season. He recalls his memorable career moment calling American Pharaoh's Triple Crown win and anticipates creating new memories at Del Mar.

It really is an exciting day, a new season. You know what? A new voice is taking over in Del Mar, but he isn't new to the sport at all, announcing races all over the country, including, of course, the Kentucky Derby. I spoke to Larry Comas about what he is most looking forward to. Yeah, I've been lucky enough to be able to grab the best gigs, you know, over the years. Lucky but also good. Larry Comas has turned his love of this into a more than 40 year career. How did you get into it? It's a job. Not too many people have. That's for sure. I grew up in Maryland. My father put in the sound system at the Maryland State Fair, and they have horse racing there. I fell in love with horse racing when I got there and decided I wanted to get involved in some way or another. And then I started listening to different announcers and their styles and how they did things from there. As a teenager, he was hooked. Decades later, he's the voice of not only the Preakness Steaks, the Breeders Cup and the Kentucky Derby, but now Del Mar Racing. Larry replaces longtime announcer Trevor Denman. What is your favorite thing about Del Mar Opening Day? Del Mar Opening Day. I think it's just going to be the whole the whole crowd, the atmosphere of the place, the electricity looking back and you think about the races that you've called. Is there one that particularly sticks out that you remember? Definitely. There was an opportunity for me to to be a part of history when American Pharaoh won the Triple Crown. It was the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years, and I was the guy calling the rate. That was something that was incredible, and I will never forget that. It's kind of hard to beat a moment like that. Who knows? Maybe more history will be made at Del Mar as we inch closer to opening day. As far as racetracks in this place is pretty special. It's just kind of the calm before the fun storm. Oh, yeah, I'm looking forward to the fun storm. The columns nice, but the fun storm is on its on its way.
