A new international trial led by the Murdoch Children's Research Institute is testing a pneumococcal vaccine that targets more strains of the deadly bacteria. The study is recruiting infants to evaluate the vaccine's safety and effectiveness.

A new international study, led by the Murdoch Children's Research Institute, is trialling a pneumococcal vaccine designed to protect infants against 21 strains of the bacteria, compared to the current vaccine's coverage of 13 strains. The trial is recruiting 1,600 babies worldwide, including participants in Perth, to receive the new vaccine alongside other routine childhood immunisations.

Pneumococcal disease can cause serious illnesses such as ear infections, pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and meningitis, with young children particularly at risk. Last year, over 2,300 cases were recorded in Australia, with nearly 20% affecting children under five. The study is open to healthy babies under two months old who have not yet received their first vaccinations.

It's really important to get that coverage for everything and especially with, I've got two other children at home that are at school and daycare and they are just around everything so for number three it was just that much more important to get. The international study led by the Murdoch Children's Research Institute is aiming to provide greater protection against a common bacteria. So pneumococcal disease causes ear infections, pneumonia, bloodstream infections and meningitis. Symptoms of the infection vary but include fever, cough, chest pains and fatigue but for babies it can be deadly. The promising vaccine will fight against 21 strains of the bacteria up from the current 13 strains the approved vaccine combats. We know that we need a vaccine for children that offers broader protection for these additional strains of the pneumococcal bacteria. The trial is recruiting 1600 babies across the world to receive the shot alongside all other recommended childhood vaccinations. And there's already good safety and effectiveness data but we need to test it now in young infants. Pneumococcal disease can cause serious illness or death in children under the age of two. Last year more than 2300 cases were recorded in Australia and almost 20% of those were in children under the age of five. So it really does offer parents the opportunity to give broader protection against this serious disease to babies.
