A significant infrastructure project is in progress in Utah to safeguard the water supply for more than 1.6 million people along the Wasatch Front. The Central Utah Water Conservancy District is constructing a 1,000-foot tunnel and rerouting a key pipeline to avoid active landslide zones and the Wasatch Fault.

The initiative uses a Japanese-imported flexible pipe system designed to withstand earthquakes, featuring multiple rubber gaskets for movement during seismic events. The project, estimated to cost around $100 million, is expected to be completed the following year and aims to ensure long-term water security for the region.

A big project is underway here to ensure you have water. When we get our water, unbelievable. I'm Ben Winslow in Oro. This is referred to as the I-15 of water. It supplies drinking water to more than 1.6 million people along the Wasatch Front. Work is underway here to make sure that it's safe in a natural disaster. We're going to show you what they're doing. Check it out. The Central Utah Water Conservancy District is in the middle of drilling a 1,000-foot tunnel on the side of the mountain. This is part of a major effort to ensure we get drinking water. In the event of an earthquake, this project is to provide us an opportunity or the best chance at providing water. The pipe takes water from the Colorado River Basin and brings it to the Wasatch Front. But there's a problem. It crosses the Wasatch Fault and is in an area that has an active landslide. So it's being rerouted. We're getting the pipeline out of the landslide area and then across the Wasatch Fault, there's two places where we're putting the specialty pipe in. They say it's necessary. To take the pipe out and to fix it would be a big deal. And then that's just really putting a Band-Aid on it. They're using a special system imported from Japan. It doesn't have a single piece of pipe that's going to try to flex during the earthquake. It's got a rubber gasket, a rubber gasket, a rubber gasket, a rubber gasket, which will let it move during the potential earthquake. The project is expected to cost about $100 million. Put all these little joints in it with gaskets and let it do its thing. Because you're not going to stop Mother Nature. The pipe is going in right now and some on the tour with us are glad to see it.
