There's a new alert system being tested that is designed to reduce close calls on airport runways. FOX's Asher Reed is in Kansas City with a look at the technology.

Honeywell Aerospace Technology has developed a cockpit alert system that uses GPS technology to warn pilots when another aircraft is on the runway during takeoff or landing. The system issues two warnings: the first at 30 seconds and the second at 15 seconds before a potential collision. 

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported over 1,500 runway incursions in the past year, with seven nearly resulting in collisions. While the new system can detect these incursions, the FAA emphasizes that improved airport infrastructure remains essential for eliminating them. Despite advancements in technology, pilots continue to be the final safeguard against runway accidents.

Honeywell Aerospace Technology developed an alert system using GPS technology that gives pilots two warnings when a rogue plane is in the way of their takeoff and landing. The first alert sounds 30 seconds before a collision. Traffic on runway. The second one at 15 seconds. It sounds like such a small amount of time, but things happen so rapidly. In 15 to 30 seconds, it's actually a very, very large margin when you're moving at the speeds that we're moving in an aircraft like this. Engineers have been working on the system since 2020. Last year, the FAA reported over 1,500 runway incursions, which is when a plane enters a runway without authorization. Seven of them almost caused a collision. Shockingly, I think to a lot of passengers, there's not an alert system available today to let you know that you're about ready to run into another aircraft on the runway. This system can only detect runway incursions, but it can't get rid of them completely. The FAA says the best way to eliminate them is to improve airport infrastructure by adding things like edge lights, signage, and pavement markers. Over the last four years, the FAA has given nearly $12 billion to airports across the country to improve their infrastructure, but Honeywell says pilots are ultimately the last line of defense. The pilots have a shared destiny on the aircraft. A pilot can be doing everything correct, but on a path to disaster.
