NASA released close-up images of interstellar comet 3I/Atlas, only the third known visitor from another star, after it passed near Mars. The closest the comet will come to Earth is 269 million kilometers in mid-December. Then it will hightail it back into interstellar space, never to return.
Breakdown
- The Atlas Survey Telescope in Chile first observed comet 3I/ATLAS and reported it on July 1, 2025.
- 3I/ATLAS is confirmed as a comet and is only the third interstellar object ever found by humanity. 13s
- The shape of the comet's nucleus is difficult to determine due to dust and reflected sunlight. 26s
- Ground-based observations track the comet's brightness to detect rotation, but results are inconclusive. 40s
- Current observations indicate the nucleus is close to round, with no evidence of a highly elongated shape. 1m 9s
