In 2025, BYD became the world's leading seller of battery electric vehicles, overtaking Tesla with 2.26 million units sold compared to Tesla's 1.64 million. This shift was influenced by Tesla's second consecutive year of declining deliveries and external factors such as reduced US federal EV incentives and the impact of Elon Musk's political activity on demand.

BYD's growth was also supported by strong international sales, reaching 1.05 million vehicles outside China, despite ongoing competition and reduced incentives in its home market. Meanwhile, Tesla's narrative has shifted towards future technologies like robo-taxis and robotics, as Wall Street grows more cautious about its near-term growth prospects.

2025 was the year China's BYD overtook Tesla in fully electric vehicle sales. Here are the numbers. BYD ended 2025 having sold 2.26 million battery electric vehicles worldwide. Tesla did 1.64 million. Back in 2011 Elon Musk wasn't really worried about BYD's competitive threat. BYD as a company has pretty severe problems in their home turf in China. So I think that their focus is and rightly should be on making sure they don't die in China. Fast forward to now part of the reason the podiums flipped is because of Tesla's own slowdown. This is the second consecutive year that deliveries have declined. Musk had predicted growth of 25 to 30 percent driven by a refreshed and cheaper Model Y and Model 3. And we did get those vehicles. But other forces are at work against Tesla. In the US federal EV incentives were rolled back and globally there's evidence that Elon Musk's political activity weighed on demand. It's not all smooth sailing for BYD either. In China incentives are also being pared back and competition is brutal. Think of names like Geely, Xpeng and NIO. Still BYD's global push matters. Deliveries outside China hit 1.05 million and that includes hybrids taking total vehicle deliveries to 4.6 million. And BYD still doesn't even sell cars in the US. Looking ahead Wall Street has become far more cautious about Tesla's growth. And that's why for many investors and for Musk Tesla's story has shifted to one about robo-taxi, proprietary ride hailing and even humanoid robotics. Those are lofty goals that some shareholders may not have the patience for.

Sunday's launches came hours before South Korean President Lee Jae Myung departed for China for a summit with President Xi Jinping, for talks expected to cover North Korea's nuclear program.
