It was the first of three electoral phases in Myanmar, and the start of the first parliamentary elections since the military coup in 2021. But with much of the country still at civil war, ballots were only open in areas under junta control. Despite a light voter turnout, some remained optimistic. This election is an opportunity to assert the will of the people. I hope it will bring change. The election is a bid by the ruling junta to legitimise its governance. But many civilians are pessimistic, such as here in the Rakhine state, where locals say the military bombed a hospital just weeks ago. I don't think there will be any changes. This is for the junta to change their soldier uniforms into civilian ones and to hold on to their power. In early 2021, the military overthrew the elected government. Former leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested and sentenced to some three decades in prison. Since then, the army has been fighting various rebel groups and is now said to control only half of Myanmar's territory. International observers monitored the first phase of the elections, with the second and third expected to take place later in January. But the United Nations and human rights groups have already denounced the process as being marked by violence and repression of the opposition. There have also been reports that the military has forced civilians to vote at gunpoint.
