Fresh accusations from Ukraine that Russian forces are using satellite internet terminals made by Elon Musk's Starlink service has again thrusted the billionaire into the center of the war. Starlink terminals are also popping up in Iran, Sudan, and Yemen and Musk said he isn't "knowingly" providing these terminals to any of these countries.

Elon Musk's Starlink service, which provides satellite internet terminals, has been implicated in controversy as accusations have emerged from Ukraine claiming that Russian forces are utilizing the service. This has brought Musk and his company into the spotlight in association with the war. Additionally, Starlink terminals have been discovered in Iran, Sudan, and Yemen, further complicating the situation. In response to these developments, Musk has stated that he is not "knowingly" supplying his satellite internet terminals to any of these countries involved.



Musk's Starlink terminals are winding up in the wrong hands

Elon Musk's SpaceX, Starlink, touts its high-speed Internet as being, quote, available anywhere on Earth. But a Bloomberg investigation has found it's being used in territories it has no agreements with, including some ruled by repressive regimes. For more on today's big take, let's bring in our Bloomberg reporter Bruce Einhorn, who led this story, and really just telling you what sort of examples are you seeing here of these Starlink kits being traded illegally. So Starlink, in many countries, has agreements with the United States, for instance, with Japan. So you can legally use Starlink equipment there to access the satellites. A lot of other countries don't have agreements. So there are places in, say, Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia where you can't use Starlink legally. There's no authorization to use it. But it's not that difficult to buy terminals somewhere on the black market, either within the country or somewhere else, bring them in, and there are workarounds that people have used. And so we're seeing this in a lot of countries, say, like in South Africa, but also in war zones, like in Yemen or Sudan. I mean, obviously this is giving security concerns surrounding a private U.S. company. How are regulators looking at this here right now? Well, in some countries, governments have issued warnings telling people, this is not okay, you shouldn't be doing this. There have also been, in some countries, police raids. Here in this part of the world, we've seen, say, India, where Starlink has applied for a license. The government just has slow-walked that. It's unclear if and when they're going to get one. And then you have the situation in China, which has just said, no, we're not having Starlink, they haven't authorized it. China is trying to build its own network.
