This is not the first time Grok has been linked to the spread of anti-Semitic narratives. French authorities have now expanded an existing investigation into X to include Grok's recent comments, while Elon Musk, owner of X, attributed the incident to a programming error and warned that the chatbot can be manipulated by users.

Under a post by a holocaust denier and neo-Nazi, users asked the AI chatbot a series of questions about discredited holocaust claims. One account that peddles anti-Semitic claims and praises Hitler asked Grok if gas chambers were originally built as disinfection facilities to tackle infectious diseases. Grok confirmed this statement, alleging that Auschwitz crematoria plans reveal that ventilation systems were built for disinfection, rather than for mass executions. A spokesperson for the Auschwitz memorial told The Cube that claims that the crematoria and gas chambers were designed for disinfection are a long-standing trope of holocaust denial. An overwhelming body of evidence supports the fact that gas chambers were purposefully built to carry out the mass murder of Jews and other prisoners interned at Auschwitz using Zyklon B. Taking to X, the Auschwitz memorial called out Grok, pointing out that the bot could be in breach of the regulations that govern the social media platform. This is not the first time that Grok has spread anti-Semitic narratives or contributed to holocaust denial. For instance, in May, the bot made a controversial response to a question about the number of Jews killed by Nazis during World War II. While Grok said that six million Jews were murdered from 1941 to 1945, it said that it was sceptical because the figures could have been manipulated for political narratives. Elon Musk, X's owner, blamed Grok's statement on a programming error. Musk has also cautioned that Grok can be manipulated by users due to its eagerness to answer questions.
