Ongoing rains and full water dams have raised concerns that the situation may deteriorate further, placing additional people at risk. Mozambique's president has prioritized emergency response, while scientists note that climate change is contributing to the frequency and severity of such disasters in the country.

Severe floods in Mozambique have forced thousands to flee their homes, aid workers and witnesses said on Monday. Some people were left stranded as surging waters swamped settlements. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has been assisting with relief efforts. They say more than 620,000 people have been affected by the floods which have caused widespread damage to homes, infrastructure and health centres. Rachel Fowler works for the organisation. The situation continues to evolve quite rapidly. Rains are still expected to continue for the coming days and the water dams are already at full capacity so the situation could worsen placing further people at risk. Fowler added that volunteers have been using small fishing boats to reach survivors but access to flood victims is becoming increasingly hard. Swathes of land have been submerged in water with only the tops of trees visible with no immediate estimate of a death toll or number of injured. Mozambique President Daniel Chapo cancelled his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos saying on social media that, quote, the absolute priority at this moment is to save lives. Scientists say the frequent weather-related disasters in the country have been exacerbated by climate change.

The death toll from Sunday's high-speed train collision in Spain has risen to 41 as recovery crews use cranes to lift up the train cars and look for victims underneath. Chris Livesay reports on the search for a cause of the crash.
