Some 53 people have been killed and 51 others are missing in Mexico's western Sinaloa state since rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel began clashing with gruesome violence showing no signs of ending.

More than 100 people have been killed or reported missing in Mexico's western Sinaloa state since rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel began clashing. Reports indicate the conflict started on September 9, with local authorities noting that the violence shows no signs of stopping.

Local authorities have disclosed that over 40 individuals have been arrested, including Fernando Perez Medina, known as El Piyi, the alleged security chief for one of the sons of jailed former Sinaloa kingpin known as El Chapo. The ongoing conflict between the factions dates back to July, when Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, allegedly a co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, was kidnapped and brought to the United States.

Zambada, now pleading not guilty to drug trafficking charges in New York, has claimed that a senior member of the rival Los Chapitos faction was responsible for his abduction. The clashes have disrupted daily life in Sinaloa's capital, Culiacan, causing school closures and early shutdowns of businesses. 

Mexico's President Andres Manuel López Obrador attributed part of the instability to the United States, alluding to prior surrender talks between U.S. officials and Joaquin Guzman López, another of El Chapo’s sons. While U.S. officials acknowledged they held discussions with Guzman López, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar stated that the U.S. was not involved in Zambada's abduction.

More than 100 people are dead or missing in Mexico's Western Sinaloa state since rival factions of the Sinaloa cartel began clashing on September the 9th, with the gruesome violence showing no signs of stopping. That's according to local authorities on Friday, as the country's president points fingers at the United States' involvement. Sinaloa's governor said more than 40 people have been arrested in recent days, including Fernando Perez Medina, known as El Piyi, the alleged security chief for one of the sons of the jailed former Sinaloa kingpin known as El Chapo, who now leads the Los Chapitos faction. The trigger for the conflict between the two most powerful factions of the Sinaloa drug syndicate dates back to July. That's when Ismael Elmayo Zambada, the leader of the faction rivaling Los Chapitos, who allegedly co-founded the Sinaloa cartel with El Chapo, was arrested in the United States. The 74-year-old has since pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges at a New York courthouse. He alleges that a senior member of Los Chapitos kidnapped him and flew him to the U.S. against his will. Since fighting broke out on September 9, shootouts have disrupted daily life in Sinaloa's capital, Culiacan, where schools have had to close on some days, while restaurants and shops shuttered early. Mexico's President Andres Manuel López Obrador on Thursday said that the United States was partly responsible for the instability because they quote, carried out this operation. He was referencing the prior surrender talks between U.S. officials and Joaquin Guzman López, the trafficker who allegedly kidnapped Zambada and who is another son of El Chapo's. U.S. officials have privately confirmed that they held talks with Guzman, but U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar said last month American officials were surprised to discover Zambada on U.S. soil. Salazar added that no U.S. resources or personnel were involved in the July 25th kidnapping of Zambada.
