Today we honor the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. During the 50s and 60s, Dr. King spoke on the poverty, segregation, and discrimination of black Americans. A defining moment of the civil rights movement was Dr. King's I Have a Dream speech. It was delivered at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963. King called for civil and economic rights and an end to racism. More than 250,000 people crowded the steps to hear him speak. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968. Dr. King visited Milwaukee on at least three occasions. Those visits happened between 1957 and 1965 at UWM and what are now known as the St. Bridget Center and the Miller High Life Theater. In those visits, he criticized then-President Eisenhower for not doing enough to end segregation and spoke about the need for civil rights legislation. There are lots of big celebrations to look forward to today. That includes a special breakfast at Pottawatomie Casino, a day of service at the Sherman Phoenix Marketplace, and the annual King Fest at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society. The Market Center also puts together a free event every year showcasing local students who take inspiration from King's words in art and writing contests.
