For nearly a decade, a small Milwaukee group has gathered each Thursday for a "Jericho Walk" to protest ICE.

A group of Milwaukee residents has held a silent protest outside the city's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office every Thursday morning for nearly nine years. Known as the 'Jericho walk,' participants circle the building seven times in silence, carrying signs in support of immigrant rights and emphasizing the importance of treating newcomers with respect.

The protest, which began before immigration enforcement became a national focus, is not aimed at immediate policy change but at bearing witness and showing solidarity. Organizers welcome anyone to join, and the walk concludes each week with a brief interfaith prayer and a commitment to return the following Thursday.

DHS says the officer shot a Venezuelan man last night in the leg after that man allegedly tried to get away from a targeted traffic stop and then attack the officer. The suspect and the officer both taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. Now, after that incident, nearly 100 protesters gathered in the area facing off with agents. The shooting comes a week after an ice agent shot and killed Rene good in Minneapolis. Thousands of federal agents have taken over that city. Meanwhile, a quiet protest has been happening outside Milwaukee's ice office for nearly a decade, long before immigration enforcement was a national flashpoint. We got a tip letting us know about this weekly event. Milwaukee County reporter Gideon Verdeen spoke with people like john and James are part of a small group who every thursday morning rain, snow or bitter cold gather in silence not to block the building, but to bear witness every thursday at nine a.m. Outside the U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office on East Nap Street, a small group gathers for what they call the Jericho walk. They circled the building seven times silently carrying signs in support of immigration rights. Those walking say the silence is intentional. The nations will be judged on how they treated the stranger and and we're failing at that since 2016 before ice was a household word before immigration dominated headlines. This local group walked in solidarity for participants. The longevity matters. I come every week because I have to do something. Others here say the walk isn't about spectacle, it's about conscience. It is who we are. It's the friends and neighbors that we've had and the impact that we want to set for respect for those around us. Ice meanwhile has said its mission is to enforce federal immigration law and focus resources on individuals. It considers threats to public safety and national security. Supporters of stricter enforcement argue immigration laws must be upheld and that border control is essential to public safety. But those who walk here say enforcement has gone too far and our history offers warnings. 100 years ago when my grandfather came here, they were saying that about him. The walk ends with a brief interfaith prayer and a promise to return next thursday. No chanting, no shouting, just footsteps week after week for nearly nine years.
