Social media users speak proudly about how far the People's Liberation Army has come, and the warning the exercises send to foreign forces who may want to stop Beijing taking control of Taiwan. Here, the government portrays Taiwan as a province of China, only temporarily separated after the country's civil war in 1949. And most people believe reunification is inevitable. Other television soap operas tell the story of nationalist Kuomintang troops fleeing to Taiwan after being defeated by communist forces at the end of the war. Movies go further back, recreating scenes of Chinese Ming Dynasty soldiers forcing Dutch colonizers to surrender control of the island after occupying it in the 1600s. Today, Beijing encourages Taiwanese students and tourists to visit China, emphasizing linguistic and cultural links. The government's message? There is, and always has been, only one China. Taiwan is an inseparable part of China's territory. It's a message being sent to the democratically elected Taiwanese President Lai Ching-ke, and to the United States, which has recently sold 11 billion dollars' worth of weapons to Taipei. Liu Guoqing hopes there will never be a war with people across the strait he considers to be Chinese. If there is a fight, it won't be against the Taiwanese people. It will be against America and external forces. We are not interested in a fight between Chinese people. Peaceful reunification would be the best. But if there is one, he's sure who the real enemy will be.
