A small town in Michoacán, Mexico, has gathered to mourn Silverio Villegas Gonzalez, a 38-year-old man killed by a U.S. immigration agent during an attempted arrest in a Chicago suburb. Villegas, who had lived in the United States for 18 years, was shot after dropping off his children at school and daycare. 

The incident has heightened tensions over U.S. immigration enforcement policies and raised questions about the use of force by ICE agents. While U.S. authorities stated the agent fired in self-defense, bodycam footage and documents suggest a more complex situation. Both the Illinois governor and the Mexican president have called for further investigation into the incident.

A small Mexican town davered on Friday to mourn a 38-year-old man who was killed by a U.S. immigration agent in a Chicago suburb. Silverio Villegas Gonzalez was shot dead during an arrest attempt on September 12, shortly after dropping off his two children at elementary school and daycare. Villegas left Urimbal in Mexico's Michoacán state for the United States 18 years ago. His return came on Thursday in a coffin. On Friday afternoon, a somber procession followed his coffin to a funeral mass. Bianca Avila was a chanted friend of Villegas. We are demanding justice for our friend and neighbor Silverio, for him and especially for his family, for his children who are now left alone. He was a great friend, a wonderful person, very simple and humble, because he never bothered anyone. He was always minding his own business. He was never a bad friend. Villegas' killing has inflamed tensions over U.S. President Donald Trump's aggressive immigration crackdown and highlighted the increasingly violent tactics of U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement agents. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said an agent fired his weapon at Villegas in self-defense after the man drove his vehicle toward agents. Bodycam footage and documents reviewed by Reuters showed a more complex version of events. Both Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have called for further investigations into the ICE agents' tactics. It was unclear whether the ICE agents would be subject to an internal review process.

At least 36 people were killed and more than 50 injured in a stampede at a rally held by Tamil actor Vijay, who is campaigning for election, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu said.
