Dads across the country marked Father’s Day being showered with gifts, but one father spent it celebrating his little miracle - visiting his youngest child in hospital, born premature at just 22 weeks.

A Brisbane family welcomed their daughter Tenaya at just 22 weeks gestation, weighing only 409 grams. Delivered unexpectedly in a hospital bathroom, Tenaya was immediately rushed for resuscitation and has remained on oxygen at the Mater Hospital since her birth.

Despite previous miscarriages, the family is grateful for Tenaya's progress as she continues her recovery in the neonatal intensive care unit. Tenaya is expected to remain in hospital for at least another month, with hopes of moving to special care soon. Her parents describe her as a fighter, already displaying a strong personality.

She was wriggling and alive so she was rushed to a resuscitation room and they did what they needed to do. A father's day in the neonatal intensive care unit isn't what the Gimbots expected and after enduring two miscarriages in the past, they count themselves lucky. It is absolutely going to be a memorable father's day, no doubt about that. There's so much to be thankful for and Tenaya's doing so well right now. She still has at least a month before she can go home. We'll be really aiming to get her to our special care where babies are focused on feeding, growing and preparing for home. The Ipswich family says their little fighter is already showing off her personality. She is pretty funny. She loves pulling her tubes out at every chance that she can.
