Tropical storm Melissa has left Cuba and is now positioned over open water, according to the latest updates from the National Hurricane Center. Despite being over water, the storm is unlikely to strengthen due to unfavorable atmospheric conditions, including increased wind shear and cooler sea temperatures.

Forecasts indicate that Melissa will impact the Southeast Bahamas and Turks and Caicos with tropical storm force winds and potentially some hurricane force gusts. However, as the storm accelerates and moves into less supportive environments, it is expected to weaken and the period of damaging winds in affected areas will be brief.

As the latest coordinates from the National Hurricane Center indeed have the center back out over water. It is now already moved through. The center has Cuba and now over the marine environment with still an unlikely chance of strengthening despite the fact that it's now over water. The conditions around it are just a bit too unfriendly. The atmospheric component, some wind shears increasing and other factors are likely lead to its weakening going forward, but still impactful again for some of the areas still yet to experience the worst of it. That would include parts of the Southeast Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos as well. And so we are dealing with this kind of environment oceanically in the Caribbean still, but thankfully Melissa is moving away from there and moving into cooler waters with less heat content. So the depth of that warm water is also shrinking. It's getting shallower and the atmosphere is also getting more hostile. So we're seeing the forecast indicate weakening generally along the way. So we'll see if indeed that is the case. Melissa moves through parts of the Bahamas and nearby areas this afternoon, four o'clock this afternoon. What I shaded here in blue is where tropical storm force winds are likely to be. And in the areas in purple, you could see some hurricane force wind gusts here as well. We could see some damaging winds, no doubt about that, across parts of the Southeastern Bahamas and areas nearby this afternoon for a brief period. But remember, Melissa is also beginning to accelerate. So that's gonna limit the amount of time that those very strong winds will be moving through.
