It marks a dramatic escalation in a standoff that has been decades in the making. Washington is signaling this move was calculated to disrupt Iran's nuclear program, not to start a wider war. But that line is becoming harder to hold. Now Iran is threatening everlasting consequences. The Strait of Hormuz is now a flashpoint as well. Any attempt by Tehran to close that critical shipping lane could spark a wider conflict and send energy markets into freefall. The endgame, at least from the perspective of the U.S. and Israel, is to force Iran back from the nuclear threshold without triggering an all-out war. Washington wants to deter Iran from enriching further, and for Israel, it's about eliminating what it sees as an existential threat. Vice President J.D. Vance telling NBC's Meet the Press, neither country wants a prolonged war. My first question, Mr. Vice President, is the United States now at war with Iran? No, Kristen, we're not at war with Iran. We're at war with Iran's nuclear program. What we did is we destroyed the Iranian nuclear program. I think we set that program back substantially, and we did it without endangering the lives of the American pilots. But the messaging from the United States has been mixed. President Trump used a post on Truth Social to once more float the possibility of regime change in Iran. But his defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, saying at the same time, that isn't on the American agenda. So is regime change off the table, Mr. Secretary? This mission was not and has not been about regime change. The President authorized a precision operation to neutralize the threats to our national interests posed by the Iranian nuclear program and the collective self-defense of our troops and our ally Israel.

Russia's Vladimir Putin has rejected President Trump's ultimatum for Moscow to sign a ceasefire deal with Ukraine in the next 50 days. Trump has threatened to issue a 100% tariff on any country that does business with Russia if no ceasefire deal is reached.
