Many Ukrainian refugees in the United States are at risk of losing their legal protections as programs such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and the Uniting for Ukraine initiative expire or are placed on hold. According to a Wall Street Journal report, those who arrived after August 2023 face particular uncertainty, with some already forced to self-deport or live without legal status. 

Advocates and refugees have voiced concerns about the lack of clear pathways to renew their status, with some holding out hope for government action. Requests for comment from the Department of Homeland Security and the White House have not yet been answered.

Legal protections for tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees will start to fade away if action isn't taken by the Trump administration. That's according to a new report by the Wall Street Journal. I spoke with one Ukrainian refugee about the worries she has and how advocates are reacting. We arrived on March 20, 2022, after months when the war started. This is Oksana Mushenko, who's from Ukraine. She and her family have been in the San Diego area for more than three years after fleeing the war with Russia. We have two categories of people who arrived before August 2023, and the second category is who arrived after this date. And who arrived a little bit earlier, they have the opportunity to apply temporal protection status, like my family. For people who came to the U.S. after August 2023, legal protections seem to be an uncertainty. The Wall Street Journal is reporting a Biden-era program called Uniting for Ukraine that granted Ukrainians a two-year renewable protection status ended. It's horrible, really horrible. First, I had a TPS, temporal protection status. My TPS gone is 19 April this year. I applied all documents, but unfortunately, now all programs, Ukrainian programs in the hold. These war refugees now either becoming illegal, or they have to go back to the war country. Mira Rubin is with the Shield of Freedom, a local group supporting Ukrainians during the war. She tells me those who've supported their fundraising efforts have had to take drastic measures after not being able to renew legal protections. Some of them have been forced to self-deport because they don't want to be targets by ICE and they don't want to be in this illegal nightmare situation. You can't work, you can't live, and yeah, it's just terrifying. Oksana tells me she still has humanitarian parole and a work permit that lasts until April next year. She tells me others are still holding on to hope they can renew their status again. Some people more optimistic and they stay here and wait decision from government. I reached out to the Department of Homeland Security and the White House for comment. I haven't heard back at this time. Ryan Hill, ABC 10 News.
