EU Home Affairs Ministers have largely endorsed two proposals from the European Commission intended to address irregular migration into the bloc. The proposals would allow member states to dismiss asylum applications and transfer applicants to non-EU countries, even if the migrants have no connection to those countries. This approach is similar to the UK's Rwanda policy, which was ruled unlawful by the UK's Supreme Court, but is gaining traction among EU nations.

The proposals also include creating return hubs outside the EU for rejected asylum seekers while their paperwork is processed for return to their countries of origin. Some countries, such as Italy, have already established such centres in Albania, which may serve as a model for others. Several EU countries, including France, Germany, Austria, Poland, and the Czech Republic, have signed a declaration supporting stronger migrant returns, external border controls, and partnerships with third countries.

EU Home Affairs Minister meeting in Copenhagen on Tuesday have broadly endorsed the two recent controversial proposals by the European Commission designed to curb irregular migration into the bloc. By changing the EU definition of safe third countries, member states would be allowed to dismiss asylum applications without consideration and transfer applicants overseas, even if the migrant has no connection to the place in question. This could result in partnership with non-EU countries similar to the UK's Rwanda deportation policy that was ruled unlawful by the UK's Supreme Court. Previously considered taboo, many countries have now come around to the idea, according to the Danish Minister for Immigration. Well, I think we need to make sure that processing of asylum claims is not necessarily done within the European Union. I think that's the best way to break the business model of human smugglers. The other innovative idea would enable member states to transfer rejected asylum seekers to return hubs outside the EU, while completing the paperwork to get them returned to their countries of origin. The Commission's proposal lays the necessary legal groundwork to allow governments to strike arrangements with countries outside the bloc that might be willing to host migrants in return for financial incentives. Two centres built in Albania by the Italian government, initially meant to host asylum seekers and now converted into return centres, could serve as a model. Other countries could follow suit with similar schemes. France has constitutional blockades, but we don't have any on return centres. I am in favour of all that will make it more effective. Migration is a priority for Denmark, which is currently chairing the EU. Many other countries seem to be on board with the proposals. France, Germany, Austria, Poland and Czech Republic recently signed a common declaration to beef up migrant returns, strengthen external borders and build partnerships with third countries.
