Arson squad detectives have released footage showing the moment a man set an inner-city Sydney restaurant alight. Police believe the attack may be related to a previous arson incident at an Ettalong Beach tobacconist last years.

Police are investigating two suspected arson attacks in New South Wales, believed to be carried out by a man hired by organised criminal networks. The incidents include a fire at a Marrickville restaurant, where a man was seen setting the courtyard alight, and a firebombing at a tobacconist in Etalong Beach, which had not yet begun trading and was allegedly intended to sell illicit tobacco. Detectives have released a photo of a man, described as wearing bedazzled crocs, a grey hooded jumper, and glasses, who is believed to be linked to both attacks. Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the suspect, who was also seen driving a grey Toyota Hilux. Police report that there have been 21 arson attacks on tobacconists in the past two years and are confident that the released image will help progress the investigation.

In relation to the video captured on May 30 which shows a man splashing accelerant around before setting the courtyard of a restaurant alight. Almost 100 kilometres away at Etalong Beach on the state's central coast, a tobacconist was firebombed last August. We believe that the man depicted on the photograph and the CCTV footage that we've shown is linked to both incidents. The tobacconist had also been broken into the day before and locals say it hadn't even begun trading. Police will allege it was intending to sell illicit tobacco. We believe that the tobacconist was targeted to eliminate competition. But they don't have a motive for why Eat Pho was targeted. The Vietnamese restaurant was also targeted the night before and while the damage to the business is minimal, it's little comfort with no one caught. Police say the man was also seen driving this grey Toyota Hilux. There have been 21 arson attacks on tobacconists in the last two years.
