Australian authorities have charged a 34-year-old man, Grafton Kaifoto, following an alleged attempt to import parts capable of assembling more than 30 Glock-style handguns into the country.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) uncovered the operation after information suggested the parts, purchased in the United States, were hidden in boxes alongside remote control car components and destined for Queensland and Victoria.

Border Force officers discovered consignment notes and addresses in Kaifoto's luggage, leading to a nationwide alert to prevent the goods from entering Australia. The investigation began after a separate suspicious shipment from Italy was found to contain cocaine. Kaifoto faces nine counts of attempting to import firearms, with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. He has been granted bail, and the case will return to court at a later date.

He looked like any other passenger arriving in Brisbane from the US, but Grafton Kaifoto was a marked man. Information obtained by the AFP allegedly outlined a plot to import the parts that could make up more than 30 Glock-style handguns. Hundreds of black plastic parts, the intention, police say, to assemble the guns here and sell them for $20,000 each. We would say for our agency, this is one of the most significant interceptions at the border of firearms that we know about. The parts were allegedly bought in America, packed into boxes, hidden in between bits to make remote control cars. When Kaifoto's luggage was checked, Border Force say they found nine small pieces of paper, allegedly revealing the boxes were bound for Queensland and Victoria. Consignment notes, consignee consignal and addresses on where they were destined. Our intelligence officers then raised alerts across the country to make sure those goods wouldn't make their way into Australia. The operation started in early June, after another suspicious container from Italy marked decorative mugs arrived. During that examination, our officers found the boxes the mugs were contained in felt slightly overweight. They then began to carefully deconstruct them and found 800 grams of cocaine. Their person of interest was then identified. The 34-year-old was charged with nine counts of attempting to import firearms. It carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail. He was granted bail this morning. The matter will return to court in September. It's most likely that these firearms were intended for the black market.
