A heatwave has pushed temperatures to around 40°C (104°F) across much of Greece. A major forest fire broke out near the city of Corinth on 22 July, prompting the evacuation of several villages.

A significant heatwave has affected southern Europe, with Greece experiencing high temperatures that have prompted authorities to close the Acropolis for several hours and require outdoor workers to remain indoors. Locals and tourists have sought relief through water, ice cream, and visits to the coast. 

Amid these conditions, a forest fire broke out in Corinth, west of Athens, leading to the evacuation of several villages. Greek authorities anticipate the heatwave will persist for several more days, heightening concerns about further fire risks.

As a heatwave swept across southern Europe on Tuesday, in Greece, locals and tourists alike were doing their best to stay cool. We're trying to survive. Air conditioning. Can't wait for the bill. The country's most famous tourist attraction, the Acropolis, closed for five hours on Tuesday as temperatures rose and outdoor workers were ordered indoors. For most people, water and ice cream were the best defence against the heat. But those who had fled to the coast had an extra source of respite. With lots of water, lots of fluids, we managed to keep going and a dip in the sea is the best. For me at least, it's the best and I'd recommend it to everyone. We sat in the shade today and we swam a lot. Every ten minutes in and out just to refresh ourselves and drink water. Greek authorities expect the heatwave to continue until Sunday but there's an extra threat looming. With a forest fire breaking out in Corinth, west of Athens, forcing several villages to be evacuated.
