U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported Thelma Palacios, a 22-year-old woman who was brought to the United States from Honduras at age six. Palacios, who graduated from nursing school in New Orleans and had no criminal record, had a pending asylum case and regularly checked in with authorities about its status.

After being detained for six months following a routine traffic stop, Palacios was deported to Honduras, a country she had not seen since childhood. She described her treatment during deportation as inhumane and is now living with her grandmother, still hoping to return to the U.S. to work as a nurse. The Department of Homeland Security stated that Palacios admitted to being in the U.S. illegally and clarified that work authorization does not provide legal status.

Louisiana woman brought to U.S. as a child deported by ICE

ICE has just deported a 22-year-old Louisiana woman who was brought to the United States at only six years old. CBS News reporter Katie Weiss tells us she graduated from nursing school in New Orleans back in May, was never convicted of any crimes, and checked in about her asylum case regularly. That's right. Thelma Palacios thought she was doing everything the right way. She was raised here in southern Louisiana, but now at only 22 years old, she's starting a new life in Honduras, a country she hasn't seen since she was six years old. Palacios had a pending asylum case. She said she checked in every year about the status of her case, but was told it was still processing. She graduated from LSU nursing school in May as a member of the school's scholars program. Then in June, after getting a car inspected for a tag renewal, she was pulled over, put in handcuffs, and taken to this detention facility in Basile, Louisiana, where she spent six months in detention. Three weeks ago, she was put in shackles and deported to Honduras. Whenever I told them I really had to use the restroom, one of the officers actually put the cuff tighter around my wrist. It was very hard seeing myself and other women and other men included in that plane, how we were being treated. It's something that I feel like it's very inhumane. She's now living with her grandmother and still dreams of becoming a nurse in the U.S. What would your message be to those who are glad to see a crackdown of these immigration policies? Some things are needed with immigration because there are bad people, but also be aware of that these are people's lives that we are talking about. We reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for a comment about her story. The DHS previously told our affiliate WWL that Palacios admitted to being in the U.S. illegally, and to be clear, work authorization does not confer legal status.
