Meteorologists from AccuWeather predict a significant build-up of heat across the Midwest and Northeast regions, driven by a developing ridge over the Rockies and a shifting weather pattern. Early in the week, the Northeast is expected to experience comfortable conditions following a cold front, but temperatures are forecast to rise later, with highs reaching the 90s to near 100 degrees and high humidity.

Meanwhile, the Midwest and Ohio Valley are likely to see frequent rounds of thunderstorms, some potentially severe, as disturbances move through the region. The southern states will continue to experience typical hot and humid weather with intermittent storms. The pattern of heat and thunderstorms is expected to persist into early August, with the main tropical weather concerns focused on the Gulf of Mexico and southwest Atlantic.

Look ahead: Heat in the Midwest and the Northeast

You know who he is, the crystal ball meteorologist Joe Lumberg. As we take a quick look at next week, Joe, it's going to be all about heat building in parts of the western U.S. We're going to see a shift to a pattern that our long-range team lead, Paul Pastelak, was talking about for mid-summer, and that's a ridge over the Rockies. And what that's going to do is dictate how things shape across the rest of the country. One of those things is that it's going to be comfortable early in the northeast behind a cold front Sunday night, but the heat does build later in the week. There'll be rounds of thunderstorms to the south and west of there from the upper Midwest into the Ohio Valley, and it looks like the heat will build in the Plains and Rockies during the course of next week. Joe, let's talk about that upper high. It's a pattern next week that I mentioned that we haven't seen a whole lot of. Oftentimes this year, you get these oscillating upper high that goes back and forth, and we really haven't seen a lot of that. No, it's been trying to build here, but every time it's done so, something has come in from the Pacific to beat it down. And that's still kind of the case next week, but there's also a ridge that's out here in the southwest Atlantic, and that's going to be moving westward with time. And as it does, I think that that's going to help to build the heights here, build the heat, and that's going to be part of the problem. But I still mentioned that these disturbances coming through the northwest flow as they come over the top of this ridge and around the heat. This air mass in here is going to be brutal. We're talking temperatures 90s to near 100 with very high humidity as that runs into this jet stream here. These disturbances, as Ari was just outlining, are going to produce some shower and thunderstorm activity on a frequent basis through most of next week, one after another. It's going to be hard to time them, but they can produce a tremendous amount of rain and a threat for severe weather from the Dakotas all the way into the Ohio Valley and the Appalachians. Typical steamy weather across the southern tier of states with risks of thunderstorms continue with spaces. But in the northeast, you're going to see some relief early in the week before the heat tries to work its way into there starting on Wednesday. As we go forward, Joe, late July, early August, you think the big story is going to be the strength and location of that upper high? Absolutely. I think that that first piece of high that I was talking about moving this way eventually merges with this, and then this is just going to blossom. And as it does, the heat is really going to expand across the Rockies out into the plains states. There'll be opportunities for some cooling relief across the northeast. Anytime a front comes through, you'll have to worry about some severe weather or thunderstorm activity. But then you get a couple of days where it's very comfortable and the heat tries to come back in. This is probably going to be part of the pattern right into the first part of August. What about beyond in the tropics, late July into August? These are the areas that you really have to be most concerned about here in the Gulf of America and the southwest Atlantic. Something homegrown, if anything, is going to develop in the tropics. Those are the areas. Anything farther out in the tropics, I think is going to be hard to come by. They'd be forced way to the south through the Caribbean or forced back out to sea. So I think we're in pretty good shape as we finish out the month of July.
