The brief describes the allegations as unsubstantiated and asserts that any issues with her mortgages were previously disclosed during her Senate nomination and vetting process.

Cook's filing argues that her pre-office conduct should be addressed through established vetting or impeachment procedures, not as grounds for immediate removal. The document also raises concerns about the potential erosion of the Federal Reserve Board's independence if presidential authority to dismiss governors is left unchecked, calling it a significant threat to the institution's autonomy.

John, thanks. Governor Cook filed an expected brief this afternoon in the district court case to overturn her firing. She says in the brief that it says Governor Cook did not ever commit mortgage fraud, calls any issues with mortgages repeatedly in this document called facial contradictions, and any issues with these mortgages, she says in the briefing, were included in documents previously disclosed to the Senate in her nomination process and her vetting. Charges against Cook are called, quote, unsubstantiated, untested, and unaddressed allegations. The pre-office conduct, what happened before office, they say should be addressed through the vetting process or through impeachment. Cook had a right, the document says, to proper notice and an opportunity to be heard. They say that the Supreme Court has already ruled this, and without meaningful judicial review to constrain the presidential firing of governors, Cook says the Fed is not an independent body. Congress intended to limit, quote, unfettered control of the president over the Fed. The president would be handed a blanket permission to unravel the foundation of the Fed and its independence. It's called the, Cook calls this the greatest threat to the Federal Reserve Board's political independence in its 111-year history. I'll leave it there. It's not that another document was just filed in which the two sides are arguing over procedure, but we do know that the administration wants the judge to rule by September 9th, it says here, in advance of the September 16th Fed meeting.
