The Kremlin has dismissed allegations and rumours that Russia ordered the killing of Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin as an “absolute lie”. But a spokesman for Vladimir Putin refused to confirm whether Prigozhin was on board, repeating that an investigation was ongoing.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesperson has rejected allegations the Kremlin was behind the plane crash that killed Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin on Wednesday. Look, right now, of course, there are lots of speculations around this plane crash and the tragic deaths of passengers of the plane, including Yevgeny Prigozhin. Of course, in the West, those speculations are put out under a certain angle, and all of it is a complete lie. And of course, it is necessary, when covering this issue, to be based on facts. Twenty-four hours after the fiery crash of the plane, said to be carrying Prigozhin, the Russian President broke his silence, expressing condolences to the bereaved families. I want to express my sincerest condolences to the families of the victims. It is always a tragedy. The primary data indicate that they were employees of the Wagner PMC. I would want to note that these people made a significant contribution to our common cause of fighting the neo-Nazi regime in Ukraine. We remember this, we know it, and we will not forget it. Prigozhin's private jet spiralled out of control midway between Moscow and St. Petersburg and crashed, killing all 10 people on board. Russia's authorities confirmed Prigozhin and another Wagner chief among them. Investigators continued to work through the wreckage, in search of answers. Many believed Prigozhin's days to be numbered, after he led a brief armed rebellion against the Russian military in June, dubbed a stab in the back of Russia by Putin himself. Well, from what I've heard that this man was up to, it's no wonder he's dead. I mean, the path he chose is so hard, it's probably no surprise. The plane couldn't have crashed by itself. Somebody made it all happen. It was too much piled on him with the smutany and such. No way he could have left this life easy. Prigozhin was last believed to be in Africa, after a pre-recorded social media address on Monday suggested he was on the continent, along with thousands of his fighters. Wagner conducts reconnaissance and search actions, makes Russia even greater on all continents and Africa more free. We are taking true warriors into service and continue fulfilling the tasks that were set. We made promises we would succeed. Putin has never tolerated insubordination and always promised punishment for those who betray him. While there's no reason to believe Prigozhin would be an exception, and even though there is now a clear line from the Kremlin, the rest of the world remains in a spiral of speculation.
